try the impossibly unthinkable

There are certain things I remember most vividly when it comes to Grandma. The elaborate hairdo she had, the tenacious willpower, the love and the rather odd meals she prepared; ….

She did not like cooking; and didn’t have to do it for a long time. My great grandma was responsible for that as far as I have been told. So we frequently ended up with fried green beans with ketchup, or zucchini with a bit of cheese, etc. Or weirder combinations.

Most of the vegetables that she used, she grew in her own little garden. It was great – no question about that – but 1 week of carrot soup for lunch? As a kid, I could have come up with thousands of dishes more exciting than that. Healthy, organic ingredients weren’t really the most important thing for the 10-year old me.

Now – trying my best to eat starch free – I find myself turning into Grandma. (taking away the elaborate hair of course.) The first few weeks I lived on yoghurt with fruits for breakfast, and omelette for the rest of the meals. As exciting as carrot soup after a while. Now – after entering stage 2 if you so will – I have begun with the experiments. Have you ever tried sauteed kohlrabi and radishes? or finely chopped kale tossed into your omelette mixture?

The possibilities are endless and I am beginning to realise that. Maybe Grandma was way ahead of her time and we never realised.
